DemoServer internal error on startup

Description
Got this when trying to start the base2 server:
Server error!
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.
If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster. Error 500 lev.thep.lu.se Thu Feb 23 16:21:26 2006 Apache/2.0.54 (Linux/SUSE)

Tomcat 5 stopped working. Nothing helped, I even resorted to CPR but to no avail, it was impossible to bring tomcat 5 back to life. I have now upgraded to tomcat 5.5 and everything works.
